Sotcher Lake is a small spring-fed lake in a granite catch basin at the base of the western slope of Mammoth Mountain, the larger of the two lakes in the Reds Meadow Valley. A short walk from stop #7 on the Reds Meadow Shuttle (across the road from Devils Postpile National Monument and adjacent to the Reds Meadow Campground), the lake is popular in summer with anglers and picnickers. The lake bottom is covered with logs from trees brought down by historic avalanches. Around the shore, an easy 1.5-mile self-guided nature trail provides an introduction to the flora, fauna and geology of the upper San Joaquin.
