The self-guided tour of the Mammoth Consolidated Gold Mine Site is a great family-friendly stroll through the woods and offers an interesting glimpse of life in Mammoth in the early days. The buildings and equipment date from the 1920s to the early 1930s, just as Mammoth began to transition from mining to tourism. Booklets for the self-guided tour are available at the Hayden Cabin Museum and sometimes at the Welcome Center. There's also information on the Sunrise Rotary website and an excellent interpretive kiosk at the site. Beware: for safety reasons, all mineshafts are closed to the public. Many archaeological and historic sites exist throughout the Inyo National Forest and on adjacent federal and state lands. These sites are special places that contain irreplaceable information of our past and are protected by law. Please take only photographs, leave only footprints, and report vandalism.
