The ride from Shady Rest to Bald Mountain is a classic long ride on groomed intermediate terrain, through woods and open country, with spectacular views of the Sierra and the Long Valley Caldera. From the Shady Rest OSV staging area take the A trail north through the tunnel at Hwy 395 and continue all the way to the D trail. Turn right and ride to the log cabin at the summit of Bald Mountain. This is a perfect place to have a picnic. On your return, take the D trail to the I trail. Turn right and head north to the tunnel at June Lake Junction, where food and fuel are available for the trip back along the G trail. Winter recreation maps are available at the Welcome Center and on the Inyo National Forest web site. Snowmobile riders are required to understand closure boundaries and stay out of closed areas.

Avalanche Forecast for 11/27/2024
- AVALANCHE FORECAST: Over the past five days, two storms brought periods of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerous avalanche conditions to the region. As the weather settles, avalanches breaking in new and wind-drifted snow will become less likely. Be prepared to assess the recent snow for signs of instability, like cracking underfoot, before venturing into avalanche terrain. We have very limited information about the snowpack at mid and upper elevations. If old snow has formed weak layers near the base of the snowpack, you can expect avalanche conditions to settle more slowly. Find out More
