Skate Skiing the MLTS Nordic Trail System at Shady Rest ◈

Skate skiing 2.9 miles of groomed trails in Shady rest is an excellent high altitude workout and a great introduction to Nordic skiing in Mammoth Lakes. The moderate terrain includes some modest hills as the trails wind through a beautiful Jeffrey pine and red fir forest, and this experience showcases just about all of the trails in Shady Rest. The groomed winter trails are located right at the entrance to Town and are accessed from the Welcome Center and Ranger Station. This multi-looped experience is shared with a variety of users, including snowshoers and dog walkers, so please be mindful of others and share the trails. Weather permitting, the trails are groomed 5 days a week and are free and open to the public.

AVALANCHE FORECAST: Over the past five days, two storms brought periods of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerous avalanche conditions to the region. As the weather settles, avalanches breaking in new and wind-drifted snow will become less likely. Be prepared to assess the recent snow for signs of instability, like cracking underfoot, before venturing into avalanche terrain. We have very limited information about the snowpack at mid and upper elevations. If old snow has formed weak layers near the base of the snowpack, you can expect avalanche conditions to settle more slowly. Find out More
