Handcycling can open up a world of opportunity for the physically disabled. Shady Rest Park is a great place to learn and practice; the terrain is flat and even, and there are plenty of low-traffic areas to ride around in. To get a feel for your new bike, do several laps on the paved parking lot. As you become more familiar with your bike and as your strength builds, make your way around the ball fields and up the incline toward the end of the pavement. Turn left at the paved sidewalk that goes between the fields to create short loops, building up over time to going all the way to the path by the bathrooms.
