A high-clearance vehicle registered for regular highway driving is needed for this experience, which is an out-and-back from Shady Rest via Forest Service Roads 3S08 and 3S33. You'll climb up Knob Hill and across the top of the Mammoth Knolls, then meet up with the Scenic Loop and Inyo Craters Road. Great views of the Sierra, the town of Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Mountain are available from several locations on this route, so be sure to stop and check out the overlooks!
