This is a good short ride for first-timers and families. From the lower end of Sherwin Creek Road ride south on two-track dirt road past the Laurel Settling Ponds to Convict Lake Road. The meadows teem with wildflowers and birds in springtime. Deer migration and fall colors take center stage in late September and October. Follow optional side roads toward the base of Laurel Mountain and the aspen grove that marks the location of Cold Springs, a natural cold-water source flowing straight out of the mountain and down a narrow creek to the ponds. Ride out and back, or return via Hwy 395.
