The Lookout Loop is a popular and easy scenic ride on dirt roads that can be done on motorcycles or quads or in short-wheelbase trucks or jeeps (and on snowmobiles in winter). From the turnout on the east side of Hwy 395, across from the Mammoth Scenic Loop, head north on USFS 3S06. Signed with arrows on carsonite posts, the road circumnavigates Lookout Mountain with two-way traffic on some sections and a worthy side trip on 2S02 to the summit. Enjoy spectacular views of the Long Valley Caldera, Obsidian Dome and Mono Craters. From Shady Rest Park use the Sawmill cut-off and the Hwy 395 OHV tunnel. Motor Vehicle Use Maps and other information are available at the Welcome Center or at the Inyo National Forest web site. Keep OHV experiences alive on public lands - stay on designated roads and trails at all times.
