D Trail - Groomed Snowmobile Trail 11.2 mi

  • The D Trail, part of the Winter Grooming Snowmobile system for over-snow vehicle (OSV)/snowmobile use, is a popular and highly scenic trail that runs east from the OSV staging area at Deadman Summit on Hwy 395 to the warming hut on the 9,046-foot summit of Bald Mountain. Groomed and marked with orange diamonds, the trail goes through old-growth Jeffrey pine forest and wide-open flats popular with snowmobilers looking to play off-piste. The historic warming hut is maintained by volunteers and the US Forest Service, and offers a great place to have a picnic lunch and enjoy sweeping 360-degree views of the entire Long Valley Caldera. The Winter Grooming Snowmobile System is groomed by the U.S. Forest Service with funding provided by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, using monies generated by registration fees and gasoline taxes.

Avalanche Forecast for 11/27/2024

  • AVALANCHE FORECAST: Over the past five days, two storms brought periods of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerous avalanche conditions to the region. As the weather settles, avalanches breaking in new and wind-drifted snow will become less likely. Be prepared to assess the recent snow for signs of instability, like cracking underfoot, before venturing into avalanche terrain. We have very limited information about the snowpack at mid and upper elevations. If old snow has formed weak layers near the base of the snowpack, you can expect avalanche conditions to settle more slowly. Find out More
