Winter Access Corridor - Lakes Basin 2.5 mi

  • The groomed Lakes Basin Winter Public Access Corridor is the main artery for non-motorized travel into the Mammoth Lakes Basin in winter. The corridor begins at the winter closure parking area at the end of Lake Mary Road and runs along the left side of the fee-based nordic track all the way to Horseshoe Lake. Stay off the groomed nordic track if you haven't purchased a ski pass. The first mile or so—to the edge of Lake Mary, with its picnic spots and grand views of Crystal Crag and the Mammoth Crest—is uphill and popular with a variety of users. From Lake Mary to Horseshoe the trail is flat or gently rolling.

Avalanche Forecast for 11/27/2024

  • AVALANCHE FORECAST: Over the past five days, two storms brought periods of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerous avalanche conditions to the region. As the weather settles, avalanches breaking in new and wind-drifted snow will become less likely. Be prepared to assess the recent snow for signs of instability, like cracking underfoot, before venturing into avalanche terrain. We have very limited information about the snowpack at mid and upper elevations. If old snow has formed weak layers near the base of the snowpack, you can expect avalanche conditions to settle more slowly. Find out More
